Matte vs Gloss Cupboards: How to Choose the Right Finish

2026 · Materials

Once you have chosen a colour, the finish is the next big decision — and matte versus gloss changes the whole feel of a kitchen. Here is how they compare.

Gloss — bright and spacious

Gloss finishes reflect light, which makes a kitchen feel bigger and brighter — great for small or low-light rooms. The downside is that they show fingerprints and smudges more, so they need a regular wipe to look their best.

Matte — modern and forgiving

Matte finishes are soft, contemporary and hide fingerprints and minor marks far better. They photograph beautifully and pair well with natural tones and stone. They can show grease near the hob, so a quality finish matters.

Durability

Both are durable when built from quality materials. What matters most is the board and the finish quality underneath — cheap finishes chip and fade regardless of matte or gloss. We use certified board and quality finishes so yours lasts.

A quick rule of thumb

Small or dark kitchen that needs light? Lean gloss. Modern look that hides daily marks? Lean matte. Want the best of both? A satin finish sits neatly in between.
